The Longest Road to Trouble

Our story begins with the most dangerous phrase in all of tabletop gaming:
“Let’s just play a quick game.”

A gathering of four.

The evening began simply enough—Jared and Jessy visiting Luke and Tory for a night of board games.

Settlers of Catan was chosen.

A game of trade, strategy… and, as it turns out, just a hint of diplomacy

Jared and Luke—strategists, thinkers, men who see the board not as it is, but as it could be.

And Jessy and Tory—good sports, patient participants… and, as it turns out, far more formidable than anyone anticipated.

The game progressed as expected.

Trades were made.
Resources collected.
Plans quietly formed behind polite conversation.

Everything perfectly civil.

Until it wasn’t.

At some point—always difficult to pinpoint in these matters—Jared noticed something troubling:

Jessy was about to win.

The longest road was within reach.

Victory, imminent.

A moment that should have been celebrated…

…but instead—

Jared made a decision.

On the surface, it made sense.

Jessy was leading.
Stopping her was logical.

And Jared, still behind, seemed like a safe alternative.

“A perfectly reasonable proposal… depending on one’s perspective.”

What the others didn’t quite see was that Jared wasn’t just slowing Jessy down—

He was quietly improving his own position.

You see, while the others focused on stopping Jessy, Jared quietly advanced his own position.

Building where it mattered.
Blocking where he could.

And ensuring that Jessy’s road… would go no further.

All while maintaining the appearance of helpful cooperation.

“A clever maneuver… though one must be careful when playing both sides of the table.”

Jessy, meanwhile, found herself cut off.

No trades.
No support.
The momentum changed.

And before long—

Jared claimed victory.

A win, by all official measures.

Well Played.

Though, as these things often go, the outcome at the table wasn’t the only result worth noting.

Jessy, having been effectively cut off from victory through coordinated effort, has since made a decision of her own:

She will not be playing Settlers of Catan again.

“A result that, I suspect, was not fully accounted for in the original strategy.”

And so, the official conclusion:

Still Under Investigation

As for responsibility?

The report is quite clear:

Jared

Lady Bea’s Final Word

A brilliant play.
A decisive victory.
And a reminder that in games of strategy…

The board is only half the battle.

Your Turn

“Now then—have you ever won the game… and lost something else entirely? Don't be bashful, tell me what happened.”
